Operator Gusto, Inc.: Benefits Operations Lead

Design and operate AI agents, automations, and workflows that govern how the Benefits organization tests, validates, and scales operational changes through parallel pilots.

Lead Hybrid Posted about 6 hours ago We Work Remotely — Programming
What this role involves

Headquarters: Denver, CO - Hybrid; Phoenix, AZ - Remote

About Gusto

At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.

All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

We’re hiring an Operations Lead, internally named Labs Lead, to build and run Benefits Labs, the system that governs how Gusto’s Benefits organization tests, validates, and scales operational change.

You will own the full Labs lifecycle, including intake, pilot design, execution governance, measurement, and recommendations to leadership. This is not a traditional program or operations role. Your responsibility is to build and operate the system that runs Labs.

This role is AI-native. You will design and run the agents, automations, and workflows that power how work is triaged, how pilots are executed, and how evidence is generated and synthesized. The goal is to create a system that can run many pilots in parallel with high quality and minimal manual intervention.

Your impact is measured by leverage: how much work the system can handle without you, how quickly the organization can test and scale changes, and how clearly leadership can make decisions based on evidence.

Benefits Labs sits within Benefits Business Operations today. You will be the founding operator, reporting to the Head of Benefits Business Operations, and will directly shape how this function evolves, including its future scope, structure, and investment.

About the Team:

Benefits Business Operations is responsible for how Gusto’s Benefits business improves and scales. The team operates across three domains: Automation, Carrier, and Quality, each focused on improving different parts of the operational system.

Labs sits across these domains as the governance layer for operational change. It ensures ideas are tested rigorously, measured consistently, and scaled intentionally. Labs partners closely with org leadership, product, engineering, and transformation teams to turn strategy into execution and build systems that improve how the business operates.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

You will operate and continuously improve the system that governs operational change across Benefits.

  • Own intake and triage: Run the AI-powered intake system that classifies, routes, and prepares incoming work. Determine the right path for each request and improve the system over time.
  • Run pilot governance: Ensure every pilot follows a clear structure with defined success metrics, checkpoints, and outputs. Use AI-driven workflows to manage execution and produce recommendations to scale, iterate, or stop.
  • Raise design quality: Pressure-test hypotheses, refine success criteria, and hold Pilot Leads accountable to standards. Improve the quality of work across the system without taking ownership away from teams.
  • Build and improve the system: Extend the existing agent and automation architecture across the Labs lifecycle, including intake routing, workflow execution, evidence synthesis, and readout generation. Increase speed, scope, and reliability over time.
  • Solve systemic problems: Identify inefficiencies in how operational change moves through the organization and convert repeatable problems into scalable, AI-powered workflows.
  • Drive decision-making: Develop analytical approaches and produce clear, evidence-based narratives that align stakeholders across product and CX and influence leadership decisions.
  • Lead cross-functional work: Own coordination across product, engineering, operations, enablement, and business partners. Manage complexity, align stakeholders, and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Create clarity in ambiguity: Lead discussions on complex operational and product topics, helping teams converge on decisions and next steps.
  • Produce leadership-ready outputs: Deliver structured readouts, post-mortems, and recommendations using AI to generate and validate evidence efficiently.
  • Shape the future of Labs: Use what you build and learn to inform the long-term operating model, team structure, and investment strategy for Benefits Labs.
  • Raise the bar for others: Coach Pilot Leads and BizOps partners on AI-powered ways of working and hold a high standard for execution quality.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Proven ownership: You’ve owned outcomes across complex, cross-functional work and consistently delivered results end-to-end.
  • AI-native builder (core requirement): You don’t just use AI tools. You build with them. You’ve designed and deployed AI agents, automations, or workflows that execute multi-step work, and you’ve measured the leverage created. This is required for success in this role.
  • Systems thinker: You identify root causes at the process level and build solutions that scale. You improve how teams operate, not just your own output.
  • Strong data fluency: You can structure problems, define success metrics, and turn data into clear, decision-driving narratives.
  • Operator + coach: You raise the quality of work around you through direct feedback, clear standards, and accountability.
  • Cross-functional leader: You’ve led initiatives across product, engineering, and operations and can drive alignment without direct authority.
  • Comfort with ambiguity: You create structure where none exists and move work forward without perfect information.

Minimum experience:
4+ years in operations, program management, or business operations in a SaaS, technology, or operationally complex environment.

Bonus:
Experience in benefits, insurance, or brokerage operations. Experience working with operational metrics (e.g., cycle time, quality, throughput). Direct experience building or managing AI agents in a production or operational context.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $98,725/year to $116,000/year in Denver & most major metro locations, and $114,285/year to $140,000/year for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

Gusto is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. We want to see our candidates perform to the best of their ability. This is a pivotal role for someone who can balance the big picture with hands-on leadership: stabilising the team, increasing engagement, developing junior managers, and stepping in to own critical customer escalations when it matters most.

You’ll also set the future Support strategy and transformation roadmap, including how we responsibly adopt AI, automation and self-service to support more customers without simply adding headcount. • Stabilising the team, increasing engagement and strengthening retention through clear expectations, consistent communication and thoughtful change leadership.
  • Managing, coaching and mentoring junior managers, building leadership capability and supporting their growth.
  • Owning customer escalations through to resolution, building trusted stakeholder relationships and communicating clearly during high-severity or critical incidents.
  • Driving performance against customer and operational outcomes including SLA adherence, CSAT, resolution times and wait times.
  • Evolving policies, processes and service design to reduce friction, increase agent autonomy and create a more proactive customer experience.
  • Using quantitative and qualitative data to identify customer trends, prioritiseimprovements and measure the impact of change.
  • Partnering with Customer Success, Product, Engineering and other global stakeholders to deliver sustainable outcomes for customers and the Support team.

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Bring 7+ years’ experience leading customer-facing teams in a SaaS business, including at least 2 years’ experience in a Director-level role.
  • Have a proven track record of leading a Support organisation across multiple functional streams while meeting and exceeding SLAs.
  • Have managed, coached and mentored junior managers and high-caliber teams.
  • Have experience stabilising teams, increasing engagement and improving retention in a changing environment.
  • Can set strategy and lead transformation initiatives involving AI, automation, self-service or other technology-enabled changes to customer support.
  • Are comfortable owning complex customer escalations and influencing stakeholders to achieve timely, sustainable resolutions.
  • Are an excellent communicator who can build trust, give clear feedback and navigate challenging conversations with customers and team members.
  • Use data and sound judgement to make decisions, prioritise competing demands and connect day-to-day execution to broader business outcomes.
  • Are willing to roll up your sleeves during critical incidents while keeping a long-term, future-focused perspective.
  • Have relevant tertiary qualifications in IT, Health, Business or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Bonus points if you:

  • Have knowledge of the aged or disability care sector.
  • Have previous experience with AlayaCare, Procura or a similar care technology product.
  • Have experience leading teams across multiple regions or time zones.

We believe great work should be rewarded.

Here’s how we show our appreciation:

We’re growing fast and are excited to continue bringing world-class talent onboard to help shape the next chapter of our growth journey.

POSITION SUMMARY

We’re on a mission to reinvent the financial system and make it work for people. We are looking for an experienced professional to lead a full-stack engineering team comprising backend and mobile engineers. As a hands-on Manager for one of our core services teams, you will have the unique opportunity to contribute to the design and development of some of our early-stage, innovative products. You will work with your cross-functional partners and team to shape the direction of these products and help make them significant drivers for the company.

This position is a hybrid role based in our Bengaluru office, with 2 days a week in the office as part of our expanding site. EarnIn provides excellent benefits for our employees, including healthcare, internet/cell phone reimbursement, a learning and development stipend, and potential opportunities to travel to our Mountain View HQ. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Be a strong partner to the product and other engineering teams, driving improvements in business metrics and building new features. Examples include improving user acquisition metrics, cross-selling and upselling products, and improving user experience.
  • Drive the design and implementation of new product areas and features. Break complex problems down to their bare essentials, translate that complexity into elegant design, and create high-quality, maintainable code.
  • Guide your team through ambiguity and ensure technical excellence through rapid experimentation cycles.
  • Guide your team to strong execution—make pragmatic decisions, help them launch MVPs quickly, and iterate based on feedback.
  • Lead your team through frequent pivots and evolving priorities in a fast-changing environment.
  • Recruit other great engineers for your team and support recruiting efforts across teams.
  • Mentor and coach the engineers on your team. Help them advance their careers by enabling them to do the best work of their lives.
  • Manage cross-functional relationships with all teams to deliver high-quality products.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with 2+ years of experience leading a smaller team as a manager.
  • You’re just as energized diving into architecture, writing clean, scalable code, and solving challenging technical problems as you are mentoring engineers, shaping team culture, and driving delivery. You know when to roll up your sleeves and when to empower others—and you’re equally excited to do both.
  • You can work comfortably with a cross-functional team of PMs, Analysts, and mobile and back-end-focused engineers.
  • You have led a team that consistently delivered high-quality output on critical infrastructure projects.
  • You are a creative, tenacious problem solver with a get-it-done attitude
  • You tend to be the standard bearer who takes a great deal of pride in your work and can inspire others to rise to the occasion
  • You can create and maintain a positive, healthy team environment in which everyone is supported, encouraged, and meaningfully challenged to do great work
  • Preferred tech skills: C#, .NET/.NET Core, Kotlin, Python, SQL, Databricks, AWS,  REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems, Kafka, CI/CD, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native development.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT, or similar tools) as part of your software development workflow

What this role involves

About Telnyx

Telnyx is an industry leader that’s not just imagining the future of global connectivity—we’re building it. From architecting and amplifying the reach of a private, global, multi-cloud IP network , to bringing hyperlocal edge technology right to your fingertips through intuitive APIs, we’re shaping a new era of seamless interconnection between people, devices, and applications.

We’re driven by a desire to transform and modernize what’s antiquated, automate the manual, and solve real-world problems through innovative connectivity solutions. As a testament to our success, we’re proud to stand as a financially stable and profitable company. Our robust profitability allows us not only to invest in pioneering technologies but also to foster an environment of continuous learning and growth for our team.

Our collective vision is a world where borderless connectivity fuels limitless innovation. By joining us, you can be part of laying the foundations for this interconnected future. We’re currently seeking passionate individuals who are excited about the opportunity to contribute to an industry-shaping company while growing their own skills and careers.

The Role

As we continue to expand across the Asia-Pacific region, we’re seeking a results-driven Regional Sales Director to lead our APAC sales organization. You’ll take the foundation we’ve built in ANZ and scale it into Singapore and broader APAC—building an outbound-first culture in a region where inbound doesn’t exist, coaching early-stage AEs into quota-carrying killers, and navigating the most diverse sales territory on the planet.

This is a player-coach role. You’ll be as comfortable rolling up your sleeves in deals as you are leading a team toward aggressive growth goals. You’ll own the full P&L of the region—bookings, pipeline coverage, team productivity, and ramp—and serve as Telnyx’s evangelist across APAC markets.

This is a build, not a manage. Expect to be hands-on for the first 12 months.

What You’ll Do

Team Leadership & Development

  • Inherit, assess, and develop a team of 4 AEs and 4 BDRs based in Sydney, scaling to 8 AEs by 2027
  • Run regular deal clinics, call reviews, and role-plays—coach from the call recording, not the dashboard
  • Build a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and execution
  • Hire, onboard, and mentor AEs and BDRs in the APAC market; build a pipeline of candidates before reqs open

Outbound Pipeline Engine

  • Build a prospecting engine that generates predictable pipeline across ANZ, Singapore, Japan, and broader APAC
  • Structure BDR→AE handoffs with measurable conversion targets (60%+ SQO-to-Stage-1)
  • Achieve and maintain 3x+ pipeline coverage—not by inflating pipeline, but by building it
  • Develop market-specific prospecting playbooks (ANZ, Singapore, Japan, Southeast Asia)

Multi-Country APAC Strategy

  • Segment APAC into Tier 1 (ANZ, Singapore—active selling), Tier 2 (Japan, Hong Kong—relationship building), and Tier 3 (India, Southeast Asia—future investment)
  • Navigate distinct buying cultures: direct ANZ, relationship-first Japan, price-sensitive Southeast Asia, volume-driven India
  • Understand competitive landscapes per market (Twilio in ANZ/Singapore, NTT/KDDI in Japan, Singtel in Singapore, Tata in India) and adjust the pitch accordingly

Go-to-Market Execution

  • Own and execute strategies to acquire new logos across mid-market and enterprise segments
  • Equip the team to sell across Telnyx’s full product ecosystem—voice, messaging, networking, storage, and AI-powered communications
  • Champion Telnyx’s AI-powered offerings (Voice AI, real-time transcription, LLM inference) as part of comprehensive deals
  • Build and leverage partner/channel relationships in markets where partners are the primary route to market (Japan, Southeast Asia)

Forecasting & Revenue Discipline

  • Deliver accurate pipeline reporting and forecasting via Salesforce, with strong focus on opportunity hygiene and conversion metrics
  • Enforce MEDDPICC discipline—inspect evidence at each stage, not just check the box
  • Maintain forecast accuracy within 10–15% across consecutive quarters
  • Run a weekly pipeline review that’s 30 minutes, not 2 hours

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Collaborate closely with Pre-Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, Partnerships, and BDR teams to create an integrated revenue engine
  • Advocate for APAC resources, product investment, and market-specific needs with HQ
  • Push back on HQ priorities when APAC reality demands it, in a way that builds trust

Field Evangelism & Market Presence

  • Act as a Telnyx evangelist across APAC—at regional conferences, industry events, customer sessions, and partner ecosystems
  • Build inbound gravity through presence: keynotes, partner co-marketing webinars, customer advisory dinners
  • Run internal enablement sessions ensuring every AE can sell across the full product portfolio with equal fluency

Rapid Domain Mastery

  • Get on top of Telnyx’s product portfolio and market constraints fast—understand SIP trunking, TeXML vs. Call Control, USD pricing implications, and what Telnyx can and can’t do in each APAC market
  • Layer in process during natural cadences, not as a multi-week reorg that pulls reps off the phones
  • Build revenue strategy around reality, not assumptions from a previous company

What We’re Looking For

Required:

  • 8+ years in B2B technology sales, with 4+ years in a team leadership role
  • Has managed a team of 4+ quota-carrying AEs (not just BDRs/SDRs)
  • Multi-country APAC experience—has sold or led teams across at least 3 APAC markets with distinct buying cultures
  • Currently based in Sydney, or willing to relocate (this is an in-office role 3–4 days/week with the team—not remote, not Singapore-based)
  • Has built an outbound pipeline engine from scratch—didn’t inherit a brand that generates inbound
  • Has implemented and enforced a structured qualification framework (MEDDPICC, MEDDIC, or similar) across a team
  • Forecast accuracy within 15% for multiple consecutive quarters
  • Has hired 5+ AEs/BDRs in the APAC market and can discuss the local talent landscape
  • Has operated lean—led teams through real constraints (thin SE coverage, time zone isolation from HQ, limited budget) and found creative solutions instead of using them as excuses
  • Professional fluency in English

Preferred:

  • Experience selling CPaaS, UCaaS, telecom, cloud infrastructure, or developer-platform products
  • Has scaled a sales team from <6 to 8+ reps and knows what breaks when you double a team
  • Partner/channel experience in APAC markets
  • Familiarity with tools such as Salesforce, Salesloft, Slack, Openclaw, Hermes Agent
  • Experience with AI-powered communications technologies (Voice AI, real-time transcription, LLM inference)

What We’re Not Looking For

  • A strategy-only leader who doesn’t coach deals—this team needs hands-on coaching, not another deck
  • Someone who’s only succeeded in one APAC country—APAC is too diverse for single-market experience
  • A big-company leader who needs a full bench (marketing team, SE team, RevOps, enablement)—Telnyx APAC is lean
  • Someone who treats “APAC is different” as an excuse—it is different, but great leaders adapt and execute, not hide behind it
  • A first-time manager learning on the job—the team needs an experienced coach now
  • A leader who can’t operate without frequent HQ access—APAC requires independent decision-making
  • The process-first director who spends weeks writing playbooks while the team stops closing deals—process should enable selling, not pause it

  • Successfully led modernisation and replatforming efforts to align legacy systems with short and long-term business needs
  • Led and delivered solutions to architecture-level problems including scalability, security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and observability
  • Facilitated alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders to move initiatives forward through ambiguity and complexity
  • Provided mentorship and team support at scale, while sharing knowledge and improving team practices
  • Collaboratively led stakeholders to balance technical considerations with product and user needs
  • Actively sought out and effectively given feedback

What You’ll Do At 8th Light

As a go-to technologist and strategist within 8th Light, you’ll work with a variety of clients, typically one to two in a year, while continuing to deepen your and our collective domain expertise over the course of your career with us. You’ll be responsible for:

  • Rapidly building trust with clients, demonstrating technical expertise and understanding of their domain and objectives

  • Driving innovation by proactively surfacing new technical approaches and product solutions
  • Leading or initiating formal feedback conversations with teams and clients via retrospectives
  • Clearly articulating and documenting outcomes and driving forward action items
  • Contributing to the health of your team and 8th Light’s culture by modeling our Values
  • Designing and managing high-level technical roadmaps for large engagements
  • Building your network and maintaining relationships with clients and other industry leaders within your domain
  • Coaching client engineering teams, transferring knowledge and leveling up practices
  • Influencing client CTOs and executive decisions. Planning and execute technical work that involves stakeholders outside of project boundaries such as across a client’s technical organization
  • Partner with account teams on planning, opportunity identification, stakeholder relationships, and pre-sales scope shaping
  • Facilitating retrospectives, strategy sessions, and technical deep-dives to improve team and project outcomes
  • Identifying, mitigating, and resolving blockers to team progress
  • Contributing to 8th Light by serving as a mentor, leading or designing workshops internally or for clients, representing 8th Light in the tech community, or supporting our hiring processes
  • Demonstrating leadership in scalable system design, modular architecture, and platform- or product-oriented development
  • Bringing depth in testing strategies, observability, fault tolerance, and secure engineering practices
  • Applying architectural patterns to evaluate tradeoffs and drive clear, documented design rationale

Strongly Preferred Skills
